On June 13, 2023, NCN’s CEO Pete Upton testified before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development at the hearing entitled, “The State of Native American Housing.”

Upton discussed the challenges of Native homeownership and summarized the work Native CDFIs do to provide home loans for Native communities. Upton noted several concerns regarding improving the rates of Native homeownership: access to long term funding, scarcity of housing stock, lack of infrastructure and skilled workers, the limited availability of land, and complex land ownership structures.
Following the hearing, Subcommittee Members requested additional information related to mortgage lending and housing development on Tribal lands.
NCN strives to represent the work and needs of all Native CDFIs across Indian Country. For that reason, we are asking for your input to the questions presented by the Senate Subcommittee.
